Because they wear gradually, most drivers only notice a problem once the pads are metal-on-metal and the rotors are ruined. The good news: worn pads almost always warn you first. Below are the five clearest signs it’s time to book a brake repair with a mobile mechanic, plus what each symptom actually means.
1. Squealing or Screeching When You Brake
That high-pitched squeal at low speed is not your imagination — it’s a small metal tab called a wear indicator deliberately scraping the rotor to warn you. Manufacturers build these in because pads wear silently until they hit the last 2–3 mm of material.
What it means
Your friction material is down to roughly 20% of its original thickness. You still have stopping power, but you’re on borrowed time. Ignoring the squeal for a few more weeks is what turns a $250 pad swap into a $700 pad-and-rotor job.
2. Grinding or Growling Under the Pedal
A deep grinding noise — especially one you can feel through the pedal — means the pads are gone and the steel backing plates are now cutting into the rotor face every time you brake. This is a genuine safety issue.
What it means
- Stopping distances are already longer than they should be.
- Rotors are being scored and will almost certainly need machining or replacement.
- In wet weather, braking performance can drop off a cliff.

- Brake fluid that’s absorbed moisture and needs flushing.
- Air trapped in the brake lines from a leaking caliper.

4. Vibration or Pulsing Through the Pedal
A steering wheel that shimmies or a brake pedal that pulses under your foot is usually a sign of warped or unevenly worn rotors. This often happens when worn pads have been left too long, or when brakes have been overheated descending long hills with a heavy load.
Why it matters
Warped rotors reduce the contact patch between pad and disc, which means less stopping force and uneven pad wear that will only get worse. In most cases the rotors can be machined true; in bad cases they need replacing.
5. Dashboard Brake Warning Light
Modern cars have a brake wear sensor wired into the ECU. If your dash lights up with a brake warning symbol (a circle with an exclamation mark, or the word BRAKE), don’t reset it and hope — get it scanned.
What the light can mean
- Pad wear sensor has triggered — pads are at minimum.
- Brake fluid is low — possible leak in the system.
- Handbrake or park brake fault.
- ABS module fault (if the ABS light is on with it).

- Vehicle weight — SUVs, utes and EVs eat pads quicker.
- Pad quality — cheap generic pads dust more and wear rotors.
